For some reason this is a hot button topic to some people. I’ve always thought the answer was quite easy. If the Olympics are such a huge event then they need the best in the world competing, and most of the time a professional athlete is the better than an amateur. It’s just common sense. It’s nice to have the stories of the underdogs, who had a rough life growing up and have overcome insurmountable odds, but I want to see the best of the best playing. And just because there are professionals does not mean that you don’t get those heart warming stories. Simply put the best athletes in the world need to be there to make the games legitimate. That means both the professional and amateurs needs to be present as long as they are the best to represent their country.
