Super Bowl Picks

Well as we wrap up the season Loren gained one game on me last week going 2-0 while I lost the 49er/Seahawk game. 74-37-1 to 54-55-1.

Denver vs Seattle
Derek - Denver. Pure and simple I don't think the Seahawks will score enough points to win the game, Will they hold Denver below their average? I think so but I don't think it'll be enough. I hope for a good one but think we'll see some ugliness in the first half before the Broncos pull away.
Loren - Denver. How often do you get to pick your home team in the Super  Bowl? By my count, six times in my lifetime. Wow, that makes me feel bad for KC, Philly, the Jets...maybe not that last one. Denver's D had the chance to rest up and get healthy. Good thing, too, since that will decide the game. If they are consistently strong on 3rd down, the offense will have enough chances to score. Denver in an entertaining game but pulling away late.

As for the Omahas, if you're Peyton Manning, aren't you a little tempted to have someone bet the Omaha line for you? After all, he's in control of the Omahas. I'm pretty sure he could have as many or few as he wants. He could have a friend's cousin's sister-in-law put a few hundred k down and split evenly. I know, ridiculous. But still...

Super Bowl picks

I’m doing well in the playoffs with a 8-2 mark. The Ravens made both Loren and I look silly holding the Pats to 13 points. Oh well on to our Super picks.

Standings
Derek 76-36
Loren 60-52

Loren – Baltimore. I have no clear cut reason why I think the Ravens will win. Some years you can simply look objectively at the two teams and know that the better team will win, like last year with the Giants and Patriots. Wait, bad example. More like in 2008, when it was the Giants and Patriots. Shoot, that doesn’t work either. I guess it’s not that easy, at least when those two teams match up. I guess I’m going with the Ravens because I still haven’t forgiven the 49ers for the beat down they gave the Broncos in 1990. Yes, I’m bitter 23 years later.
Derek – San Francisco. I think these teams are evenly matched. Solid on both sides of the ball. One QB can throw deep one can take it the distance on any play. But looking at everything from a high level I’d say the 49ers have the better team overall. I think Kaepernick will win the MVP and jump into the some deranged 49er fans pantheon of great QBs.

Super Bowl picks

Well the outcome doesn't matter as far as the NFL pick duel between Loren and myself goes, but I guess it's a big game or whatever.

Green Bay vs. Pittsburgh
Loren – Green Bay. Since I don’t have to worry about being right, I’m going with my heart over my head. It’s hard not to see the Steelers as the favorite with more experience, veteran leadership, consistent ground game, and consistent defense. But I’ll take Green Bay because I’d love to see the Packers usher in a new era and sever any lingering nostalgic ties to Favre.

Derek - Pittsburgh. And I'll take the Steelers for all the comments Loren made. Basically they can play with anyone and can beat anyone any day of the week, including a super Sunday. Rodgers might be the better QB but he hasn't played like it 3 out of the 4 last weeks. I expect a great game and I hope we get it.

Super what now?

OK folks it's time for our Super Bowl picks. This really has no bearing on our pick'em challenge since I can't win no matter what I do here.

New Orleans @ Indianapolis

Derek - Indianapolis. Sure I'm going against the sentimental favorite but heck I'd like to go out on a winning note. The Colts are just a plain juggernaut right now, or heck all year. They really have not lost a game that they decided to play. Sure the Colts D might give up 30+ points, but Manning and co. will score 40+. I don't think it's going to be a competitive game.

Loren - New Orleans. I have nothing to worry about with my pick, so I may as well go with heart instead of head (and pull some reasons out of my butt about how the Saints can actually win this game). First, the Saints are the scrappier of the two teams. They are never out of a game and they have the will and firepower to overcome 20 point deficits. Second, they are riding a wave of goodwill not seen in a Super Bowl since, well, ever. Ninety percent of the country is firmly rooting for the Saints and that is some serious good vibes heading their directions. Third, and most importantly, you should never bet against a Saint.
